150 years of organized sports in Hengelo
In 2025, we’re celebrating a very special anniversary: 150 years ago, the first sports club in Hengelo was founded – our very own Hengelosche Gymnastiek Vereeniging (nope, those aren’t typos). Before that time, sports clubs didn’t even exist. How special is that?
We’re celebrating with a year full of highlights. On April 5, a fantastic anniversary festival already took place, featuring top performances in sports and music, an impressive mini-documentary (watch it here!), and the cherry on top: the honorary medal from the municipality of Hengelo and an unforgettable skippy ball race.
Our anniversary committee hasn’t been sitting still:
Participation in the carnival parade (just like in 1963!)
Development of an artwork and a special HGV playground structure
Holiday activity school for children
Sports route in collaboration with other clubs
The big finale?
On November 29 and 30, all our members will shine on stage at the Schouwburg during the grand HGV Sports Spectacle! Don’t miss it!

Sports Club H.G.V.
H.G.V. is an inclusive and accessible club where everyone can participate in sports or physical activity at their own level. Classes are held at various locations throughout Hengelo and are led by qualified trainers.
